9. THE ARTIST FORMERLY KNOWN AS ISLAMIC STATE

SARA and SARAH sit. SARA is marking up her form in red pen. SARAH may hum ‘They’re Changing Guard at Buckingham Palace’ quietly and defiantly until SARA looks at her.

SARAH: Must be an administrative mistake, but apparently if you get the letter you’ve got to come. I mean I’m not complaining, you know, it’s worse for other people, obviously.

Beat.

SARAH: The irony is, not only are both my parents British – I mean my dad’s Scottish, and obviously they’ve gone their own way but they’re still sort of, you know – but my grandfather – mum’s dad – was a Scots Guard. Know what a? (Singing.) ‘They’re changing guard at Buckingham Palace’ – that’s a Scots Guard, see they’re actually very English. ‘They’re changing guard at Buckingham Palace, Christopher Robin went down with Alice’.

Used to love that song. Always felt special because I had a personal connection.

Beat.

SARAH: I’ve been to India.

Goa actually. Yoga retreat.

Very nice, peaceful.

Have you been there?

SARA: No.

Beat.

SARAH: ‘They’re changing guard at Buckingham Palace’
